It has become increasingly common at a popular level to challenge the authenticity of the gospels. Particularly, challenges are made to the named authorship. In essence, so a common argument goes, the gospels were anonymous and in order to push their new religion ‘big names’ were attached to the gospels as a bit of Christian PR.
