The backstory to Spurgeon’s famous quote

You may or may not have heard about Spurgeon’s famous quote:

if sinners will be damned, at least let them leap to hell over our bodies; and if they will perish, let them perish with our arms about their knees, imploring them to stay, and not madly to destroy themselves. If hell must be filled, at least let it be filled in the teeth of our exertions, and let not one go there unwarned and unprayed for.

I have written an as-yet-to-be-published book whose title comes from this very quote, so have a vested interest in bringing it to your attention. But you may not know the background to the quote and what specifically prompted it. Helpfully, Mike Leake outlines the background here.
