Why mental health issues are no excuse

A well-known public figure, known only as PPT, has begun procedings to permanently block the publication of some allegation of inappropriate sexual activities, so The Guardian reports. In their defence, PPT is arguing that publishing these reports will have a severe impact on their mental health. Specifically, ‘his legal team argued that publishing them would “highly likely lead him to commit suicide”.’

Of course, I neither know who PPT is (and am not going to guess) nor do I know how credible the claim of likely suicide really is. What I do know, however, is that using mental health issues as a defence for ill behaviour is not a good argument for several reasons. However, rather than re-invent the wheel, I thought I would point you to two old posts that lay out precisely why, related to different cases.
